The new year promises a change in the general weather situation over Europe. For the Alpine region, however, this does not mean any significant or lasting change in the weather, although a temporary weak disturbance will be noticeable from Friday to Saturday. On Friday, cloud cover will increase throughout the day in the mountains, with strong westerly to southwesterly winds in some areas. The sun will be increasingly obscured by the afternoon, and light to moderate snowfall will generally pick up during the night leading into Saturday. Saturday will start with the last remnants of a weak disturbance, but bright sunshine will soon prevail again. A new extension of the high-pressure system centered over the North Atlantic will move over our region, bringing another surge of polar cold air. This means that, at least in terms of temperatures, we will continue to experience distinctly wintry weather. However, no new precipitation is expected. On the contrary, high pressure will continue to bring fair weather during the first half of next week.
