A powerful cold high over northeastern Europe and an extensive low-pressure system over the Atlantic, with its offshoots over the western Mediterranean, will continue to be the major opponents in the weather over Europe. Over the weekend, the high in the Alpine region will temporarily prevail again, so we can expect mostly sunny weather on both Saturday and Sunday. The severe cold will remain in the east, while we will continue to experience only moderately cold winter temperatures. However, this will change at the beginning of the new week. The low-pressure system from the west will then move closer to us again, causing the wind to shift back to the south. On Monday, a strong southerly foehn will blow in the mountains, continuing on Tuesday and temporarily pushing temperatures up. On Wednesday, the foehn wind is expected to come to an end, allowing some precipitation from the south to spread northwards over the main Alpine ridge. The snow line will be around 1500 meters above sea level.
